Greytown Quadrille Assembly.

The Quadrille Assembly in aid of the funds of the Greytown Fire Brigade and the Private Brass Band conjointly, held the first dance of tho reason at the Town Hall last n’g'it. As was expected, the room wna filled almost to oveiflowing. There were about seventy couples present, who indulged in dancing, independent of a number of friends who merely attended as onlookers. Indeed, it was one of the most successful gatherings of the kind yet held in Greytown. Mr J. Maguire acted ns M.O. to the gratifies* tion of everyone, and tho Private Braga Band, relieved by Mr Lewis on the violin, supplied the music in excellent style. After the dancing had been sustained with much snirit for some time. Mr F. H. Wood, the Mayor, hy request, addressed the company ia a most humorous speech, dwelling much upon the importance of supnr rting the efforts of the Fire Brigade to preserve the town from the effects of the devouring element. He thought the importance of this body was patent to every resilient in the borough—that it was so was evidenced by the splendid gathering of townspeople then present. As to the efficacy and diligence of members of the Fire Brigade he could fully testify to that, for being a reaident in the immediate vicinity he had always a chance ol being one of the first to hoar the fne bell, and. although having always risen with dispatch upon being alarmed, ho invariably found some members of the Fire Brigade on the scene before him. He had sometimes the impression that they mu‘t sleep in their uniforms. As to the Band, till could acknowledge the Private Band had frequently conduced to the amusement and enjoyment of the district in many ways, and upon many oecisions, and he considered they were fully deserving of all the assistance and encouragement the public would render. He considered that money was far more pleasantly raised by means of these gatherings than by subset ip. tious and donations The Mayor was very happy in bis remarks and was warmly applauded by the company. After fiis Worship the Mayor had addressed tho company, dancing wna resumed and continued with mueh vigor until 12 p m. As was previously arranged, the Fire Brigade heade I by tfie Band marchelm procession from the Post Office corner to the Hall with flaming torenes and the engine illuminated, and the night being dark and favourable for the purpose, the effect was ex* celled.
