Taratahi-Carterton Road Board.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Council Chambers, Carterton, on Saturday. Present—Messrs B. Boys (chairman), Grace, Dorset, Parker, Gallon, Bunny, Booth, Brnithwaito and Reynolds.

After the treasurer’s balance sheet was reail,

Mr Thompson applied for leave to erect a gate on the road leading to bis property ; be assured the Board that he bad the consent of his neighbors. Granted. Mr Rayuer applied for a right of road leading to his property, section 15d, through section 201 to Main road, as in consequence of Mr Perry objectin' he is now prohibited from making use of the road be had formerly been iu the habit of travelling upon. Mr Perry, who was present, said his main objection to parties travelling that way waa on account of the gates being left open. Mr Rayuer said he wanted to secure a road. He did not like to be in the position of being stopped any moment. Mr Booth said he wonld be prepared to move that Mr Bayner’s request be granted, providing Mr Perry would not require the Board to fence without the traffic on the road manifestly became a nuisance to him. tic had eat on the Board for abont twelve years, but had heard no complaints from other parts of tbs district about gates. He would move that the road connecting Mr Rayner’s property with the main road (Hughes' Line) be formed and metalled, so as to be available for traffic, and that the Board should not be called npon to fence, without it was the opinion of the Board that Mr Perry’s property (offered in conaeqnnnce. Seconded by Mr Bralthwaits and carried.

Mr Perry (who had agreed not to call upon the Board to fence without juit cause) was authorised to place gates at the main road, end at the end oearest Mr Bayner’t property. Mr Braithwaite seconded, end it was agreed to. Mr Aplin asked for a bridge near bis place on Hilton Boed ; he asid a culvert to cost £8 or £4 would be sufficient. Mr Booth moved, snd Mr Gallon seconded. That Mr Parker get the work done. Carried, Mr Parker asked lor a road to be laid off through section 315 to Hinan Gully. Mr Braithwaite moved, and Mr Booth seconded, that tba application be granted. Carried.

Mr Butler made an application for some work to be done in No 2 Ward. The matter was left in the hand* of Mr Dorset. The Chairman remarked that it was • special field day with applications. Mr Penchant, with a large deputation, waited on the Board for aome gravelling to be done on the Hinas Gully Boad. Be, and the other gentlemen forming the deputation, impressed upon the Board the necessity for the work being taken in band before the winter eeasou.

Mr Booth said there must have bean soma nspiratioo in thia matter, as be had intended to visit the locality that afterneon to see wbat was most urgently required ; he would wish to submit to the deputation that it waa not tbe fault of the Board that work* were not promptly attended to ; when tbe Board were in fund* they had to devote them to tba most urgent wants ; there waa a good time coming, and uo donbt all tbe ratepayera would have tbair reouirementa tally satisfied.

A letter was read from Mr W. Candy re drain on Park road Tbe writer urged upon tbe Board the neoeesity for attending ta tba same. The matter was left in the handi of the Warden. The Chairman eaid one of the local paper* bad called attention to aome obstruction on Park road, bot before tbe complaint bad appeared in print the eaid obstruction bad been cleared away. Ha believed that there bad been sn arrangement between the County Council and Mr Dakin to fall three chain* of bash ; two obaina had been fallen, but on the left band aide of the road, ao far a* ha could see, tba bash that felled wai burned on tbe wrong side of tbe road. Ha wiahad the Board to coma to a decision as to wbieh body was responsible for clearing the lead. Mach discussion ensued ae to who waa the responsible party, the Board, County Council, or the owner of tbe land abutting, and the chairman said, in answer to Mr Braithwaite, that tbe Board must hold the owner of tbe land responsible.

The Chairman then moved that the clerk write to Mr Dakin requiring him to remove any timber that may become an obstacle, or if he fails to do so the Board will remove it at bis expense. Agreed to. Mr Gallon said on Thursday morning Ur Brooks had stopped the contractor from bringing metal along the road down by the railway between Moffat’s Line and the railway siding. He said be had spoken to Ur Bnohanan, and that gentleman bad prosiaad to make enquiries at the Public Works Office. He (Mr Gallon) said tbe road was ol no service unless it ia a through road. It was resolved that the muter be allowed to stead over until Mr Baohenaa had obtained the required information, the Board being ol opinion that ',the ’matter should be settled ae soon as practicable.

Tin dim. The following tender! were received (or 34 chains formation, culverts, and metalling Carterton to Gladstone Boad :—P. Carr, LlO9 ; P. Dalev. L 77 j.John Hart, at L2 19s 6J per chain ; Jno. Monaghan and W. R. Ooa tbe same pi ice per chain, respectively ; W. Cowley, at L2 4s per chain with culverts LI each. P. Daley’s tender wae accepted. Tbe following tenders were (received (or 18 chains road formation and culverts on the Abiarnhe Boad P. Carr, L2, 10s; A. Nielson, L2 6s 9d per chain ; A. Pitobeo, LI 6s per ehain ; John Hart, Ll 11* per chain ; L. Andersen, Ll 2s 6d per chain ; W. B. Coe, Ll Is 6d per chain (accepted). Mr Dorset asked for some work (gores catting) to be done on Nix's Line. Granted.

It fit resolved to hold the meeting* in future on the first Saturday in the mouth.
