Carterton Jottings.
(Bt Onloosxb.) Monster Special Bettlemeat Meeting next Wednesday. Messrs Buchanan and Bunny both invited. Ton will have a full report, of course. All interested are invited to attend. The | Lincoln road ssttlera intend taking advantage of resolution passed at Town Board meeting, by having three bridges instead of one. A deputation will shortly wait upon the Chairman to state the assistance (bey will give. Detective Cbrystal will have his bands pretty full in tbe Wairarapa district for some time to oome, for what with mysterious fires and sheep stealing our district is getting unenviably named. The aplendld rain we have had has done • worldjof good'; already stock has somewhat advanced, and those so anxious a week ago to sell at any prioe are few and far between, there being now every prospect of good winter feed. A case of the ridiculous charges made by oar Government Railways came under my notice a short time ago. A settler requiring to send batter to Wellington was charged 7s for a case weighing llSlbs, as any package weighing over 112lbs waa charged as 2owt. He was further informed that by dividing the weights into say lOlbn and 151bs the freight would be only 6s 6d, the charge being for qnanties np to 281bs, 2s ; to 561bs, 2s 3d ; to 112, 3s 6d. From Carterton thus a saving of Is 6d could be effected. Why this should be remains vnezplaioed. The charges made for carriage of produce are far too high, giving tbe settler little chance of forwarding bis produce to town, and I think if representations to this effect were made te the proper quarters a considerable redaction would be made. Perhaps, Mr Editor, you will make further enquiries into the matter, and oblige your- Carterton friends.
