Fire Brigade Competition.
The members of the Grey town Fire Brigade assembled at the Recreation Ground on Auuiveisary Cay to contest among themselves tor several prizes subscribed by the Brigade and the public. The men were on the ground punctually at one o’clock, and went through their exercises with precision and smartness.
The first event on the programme was a five men competition with the engine, between two teams nnder the direction of Captain Baillie and Lieutenant Maguire respectively. Each team had to run to the engine from a point 50 yards distant, connect two lengths of suction hose to engine, run oat 75 yards of hose and fix branch and pins, close door, give three distinct beats at the engine. The trials reunited as follows ; —Lieut Maguire’s team, first prize of 30s ; first ran 38) secs ; 2nd run 39 secs. Captain Baillie’a team, second prize, 15s ; first run, 491 sees, second ran 43 secs.
Two Men Contest—To put engine in working order under same rules as for fire men team. The result was as follows Muir and Bowers; 33) secs ; first prize £l, a card box and sugar basin ; Qrigg and Franks, 31£ secs, second prize of 15s ; G. and W. Humphries, SSsecs, third prize 10s 6d Blanche and Bowe, 35 secs, fourth prize of ss. One Man Content, Ist prize Brittania metal teapot and five shillings—J. Quin, 39 four fiiitha. This young fellow is very smart at whatever is entrusted to him, and is looked upon by his comrades as one of the beet all round members of the Brigade. Second prize, beehive and 2s 6d, A. Bowers, 14 fonr fifths secs. Third, ditto, pair pictures, R. Grigg. Fourth, do, pair Vases, W. Franks, 46J sees. Fifth do, 3 sections honey, A, L. Webster. 48 7 fifths secs. F. Muir took the unknown prize. Five Men Reel Contest—Captain Baillie’s team, first prize 20s ; first run- 54|seo8, second ran 46seei. Second prize, 10s, Lieut Maguire’s team ; first run 66} secs, second run 56} secs. Fireman’s Race, 220 yards—G. Humphries 1 ;J. Humphries 2. There were five entries. 100 yards race—J. Roydhouse, 1. Four entries.
In the evening the Brigade assembled at the Forester’s Arms Hotel, where Mr Jonee had laid out a tempting spread, which the company fully enjoyed. Captain Baillie presided, and before breaking up an hour’s conviviality was spent, several toasts were drank, and some good songs sung. During the evening one of the invited gneste, Mr A. Gray, complimented the Brigade upon its efficiency, and upon the good work done that day in the competition ; when he considered the time spent in attending practices, and the expenses connected with the Brigade, be could not but think that they were in want of what is familiarly called “ cheek,” for they bad gone on uncomplaining without troubling the public ; he though they were too modest and should make a practical appeal, for they were entitled to assistance. The Brigade afterwards adjonrned to the Town Hall, where a large number assembled tor a dance. The Private Brass Band supplied the mnsio, and all appeared to enjoy themselves, notwithstanding the warmth of the room.
