The Carriage on Wool.
To the Editor of the Standard
Sir, -I notice by the Wellington papers that the Government have promised a reduction in carriage on wool from 6s 3d to
5s id per bate, and also a reduction on merchandise. It strikes me the v'.iiaijpa carriers, by their came it action in lb s matter, have shown the representatives the way round, and arc certainly deserving of some recognition from the settlers in the Wairarapa generally- I cun picture the glory there would have been had the reduction been obtained by the individual efforts of a member of the House, but then of course he could not have said, “If you do not reduce the rates 1 will compels against you.” I would like to see the matter taken up on behalf of the carriers who were prepared to risk so much in going over the hill, and would be glad to contribute my mite. The wool growers and tradesmen will be mostly benefited by the reduction, and should show well to the fore. I am afraid the reduction on merchandise will be too small to enable the tradesmen to reduce prices much. Consequently they will chime in with the wool growers, but the earners deserve the credit, nevertheless. I am, Ac., Fair I’lav.
