Something Wrong.

Though according to the predictions of Sir Julius Yogel, when he was putting up for a seat in Parliament, “ the colony was to advance by leaps and bounds,” yet somehow there sra several places in which nothing of the sort has taken place. Otago is dull and depressed. Canterbury has a lot of unemployed. Auckland, which a year back had “ booming times,” is now suffering a period of reaction and dulness, and has hundreds of people unable to find work. Then the latest telegram from Napier is as follows ‘‘Twenty six of the unemployed met the Mayor, and asked for temporary employment. The Mayor promised to communicate with the Government. Twenty three are laborers, eighteen being married, and having seventy four children. Twelve of the number belong to other parts of the colony, chiefly Christchurch.” All this sort of thing does not look like advancing ‘‘by leaps and bounds.” It is a great misfortune that while this state of thing exists, the affairs of the colony should be under the control of a Ministiy whose incapacity and blundering have caused them to be utterly distrusted alike by Parliament and the people.
