ANNUAL MEETING OF THE GREYTOWN TRUST.

The annual meeting of the Greytown Trust was held at the Town Hall on Friday evening last, and, as usual, was but thinly attended. Mr Payton, having been appointed to take the chair, read the notice convening the meeting, and called upon the secretary to read the annual report and balance sheet. FIFTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE THUS" TEES OP THE GREYTOWN TRUST LANDS, APRIL 7, 1876. Your Trustees beg respectfully to report to this meeting their proceedings during the past year. A vacancy having occurred in the Trust, by the death of Mr William Humphries, Mr M. Caselberg was, on the 4th September last, in accordance with the provisions of the Masterton and Greytown Trust Lands Management Act 1871, clause 15, duly elected to fill the vacant office. The balance of the purchase money, viz., £IOO due to the Trustees of the Greytown Town Hall has been paid and the purchase completed. Your trustees have taken into consideration the improvement of the Hall, it being in its present unfinished state, ill adapted to the purposes of a public Hall, and with

the view of carrying out the work have had specifications prepared, and have invited and received tenders for the work ; but as the funds at present in hand, and the income of the Trust are so small compared with the amount required, also that your trustees arc not empowered by the Act to raise a loan, they are compelled for the present to decline to undertake the responsibility. Your trustees, however, being impressed with the urgent necessity of the work would suggest that the meeting take the matter into consideration, and take steps to devise means of raising the amount required. The Hall, if finished, would be much more called into use than at present, and consequently would well repay the outlay, and would be the largest and most commodious public building in the district

Mr A. Fabian having applied to lease from the Trust, town belt sections Nos. 54, 55, SG, and 57, at an annual rental of £G, your trustees have consented to grant the same. The accounts have been made up, and audited to the 3rd inst. There is a balance in the hands of the Bank of £B4 14s 4d, and a sum of £2l 4s yet due on account of rents. The liabilities amount to £ll 12s 3d, which when discharged will leave a balance in favor of the Trust of £B4 6s Id, as shown in balance sheet appended. This meeting will be required to elect two trustees, in place of those gorhg out of office by rotation, Mr Robert Lucas and Mr Bernard Gallagher being the retiring trustees, both of whom are eligible fur re-election. Moved by Mr Homblow, seconded by Mr Sayer, and carried, “ That the annual report and balance sheet be adopted.” The question of raising money for the completion of the Hall was then considered. Mr Lucas explained that the bank would advance die amount required if the Trustees became personally responsible for the sum advanced. In reply to the chairman, Mr Lucas said the Trustees had not ascertained whether money could bo obtained on the security of the rents of the trust. It was resolved on the motion of Mr T. Kempton, jun., “That this meeting authorise the Trustees, if they deem it necessarj, to raise money for the completion of the Hall on the security of the rents of the Trust.” Two Trustees retiring, Messrs Lucas and Gallagher, the election of two others was taken into consideration. Mr Payton was proposed by Mr Lucas and seconded by Mr Braggins. Mr Payton said he would stand as he understood Mr Lucas declined to be reelected, otherwise he would not have stood, as the trust was indebted to Mr Lucas for valuable services and would miss him. Mr Hornblow was proposed by Mr Kempton, sen., and seconded by Mr Bishop. Mr Gallagher (who was absent) was proposed by Mr Sayer, and seconded by Mr Hawkins. A show of hands gave the following resultPayton 9, Hornblow 7, Gallagher 3, and the two former were declared elected. A vote of thanks to Mr Lucas for his past services as chairman was unanimously carried on the motion of Mr Braggins, seconded by Mr Homblow. Mr Lucas thanked the meeting for the compliment paid him. His reasons for retiring were a desire to see new blood imported into the trust, and the pressure of private business and other public appointments. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
