POLO
PROVINCIAL COMPETITIONS. The semi-final of the Auckland Provincial Polo Association’s senior cup competition, between Cambridge, the holders of the .cup, and Te Awamutu, which was played at Bardowie, Cambridge, on Tuesday afternoon, provided one of the fastest and most exciting games of polo ever witnessed at Cambridge. It resulted in a win for the local team by five goals to four. The teams were:—Te Awamutu: Len Kay, Lyall Kay, PI. Kay and D. Kay; Cambridge: R. Nolan, K. Peake, G. Vosper and H. Peake. Te Awamutu established a lead of 3—l in the third chukka, but by the fifth spell the score had been equalised. Cambridge gained the lead in the sixth chukka. Te Awamutu equalised and extra time had to be played. At this stage Cambridge was having the best of it, and with Te Axvamutu playing a defensive game, scored the winning goal. For Cambridge PI. Peake hit four goals and Nolan one. PI. Kay scored all four for Te Awamutu. Cambridge’s win was all the more meritorious in view of the fact that H. Peake had to retire with an injured arm in tlie : fifth chukka, being replaced by R. Speake. G. Vosper suffered a painful knock on the elbow early in the game, and K. Peake a severe blow on the knee in the sixth spell. Both the latter players were able to continue, however. In the junior cup semi-final Matangi defeated Cambridge by eight goals to four. The teams were: Matangi: C. Bryant, T. Ferguson, R. Ranstead and D. Hinton. Cambridge: R. Townend, R. Hannon, R. Peake and R. Speake. For the winners Ferguson hit four goals, Ranstead three and Bryant one. Speake and Peake each scored two goals for Cambridge. Mr N. Banks refereed both matches. The finals will be played next Tuesday, Cambridge meeting Matangi in the senior match.
