HALF-A-CENTURY AGO
HAPPENINGS IN THIS DISTRICT. Published in The Wiaikato Mail, on September Ist, 1880, was this interesting report on the Te Awamutu district (by own correspondent):— As a place of settlement this district will yield to none. The magnificence of its fernlands covering hill and dale, its prosperous farms producing the finest stock in the colony, and its enormous wool growing facilities offer great inducement to the intending settler. Auckland is greatly indebted to us for her supplies of stock to the breeding of which much attention has been devoted. The stranger visiting our place for the first time is generally astounded at the progress we are making in commercial as well as agricultural pursuits. Many* new places of business are being projected and every branch of business is represented amongst us. "We.have two hotels, viz., the Commercial and the Central "Wiaikato. The Commercial is admirably conducted by Mr and Mrs Devine, who are pleasant, kind, homely people and are ever ready to extend a hearty welcome to all who may flavour them with a call. A coach runs to and fro between the Commercial and the railway station. The Central Wa"kato is also a welT-con-ducted house. There are four stores here, viz., those of Messrs Duffus and Dickey, Mr Bridgman, Mr Teasdale, and Mr Sloan, where every requisite for a family can be obtained. Mr Floyd has a seed store, Mr Avenel , conducts a butcher's shop, Mr Moses has established a branch store from Hamilton, Mr Hunter has ia saddler's shop and in Mtf, Richard's, a cabinetmaker's shop articles are turned out which would not disgrace an Auckland window. IWje have also a brewery established by Mr Innes, -wherein this, to many lan undispensable beverage, is brewed of a quality not inferior to any other in. New Zealand.
