KAIRANGI SETTLEMENT
ADVISORY ADDRESSES. On Wednesday evening a visit was paid to the Waikato Land Settlement Society's new settlement at Kairangi, near IRoto-o-rangi, by Messrs A. J. Sinclair, secretary-manager of the Te Awamutu Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., and M. H. Williams, the well known horticulturist, these gentlemen having accepted invitations to deliver practical addresses to the new settlers. The meeting was held at the residence of the manager, Mr L. G. Kearville. At the outset, Mr Sinclair made it clear that he had not
come seeking business for his company, but merely to chat to the settlers on some aspects of their enterprise. He dealt particularly with the commercial side of a small dairy farm, using as an illustration the practice of the Danish system, which he explained in detail, and then advocated pig raising as a side line to dairying. It was, he said, not essential to have large herds to make a living from dairy farming. He went on to give a good deal of information bearing on farm; management. Mr Williams gave a demonstration on the propagation of fruit trees and berries, and the pruning and spraying of same; also advice on the several profitable sidelines of horticulture to assist income. Then he devoted a few minutes to remarks on general horticulture, and explained the method of obtaining shelter belts at the cost of seed only. At the close the visitors were heartily applauded for their helpful advice, which would assuredly be kept in mind when the property was being developed and eventually subdivided into separate holdings. .Mrs Kearvell then dispensed supper, and the visitors returned to Te Awamutu.
