BILLS FOR HIGHER SILVER PRICES.
An important move to subsidise the export of American agricultural products and to raise the world price of silver was made last month by the Coinage Committee of the House of Representatives in Washington. The
Comtmittee approved Bills authorising the United States Treasury to pay 25 per cent above the market price for silver shipped to the United States in payment for agricultural commodities, and also to purchase 1,500,000,000 ounces of silver at mar-
ket prices. A section of American opinion has long urged that a rise in the value of silver would increase the power of silver-using countries, such as Chinaand India, to buy American products, especially farm comanodities,
