ST. JOHN AMBULANCE
BRANCH FORMED IN TE AIWAMUTU. INSTRUCTION CLASSES TO BE ORGANISED. A highly successful and enthusiastic meeting re the formation of St. John Ambulance classes was held in the Waipa Post rooms on Tuesday evening, when there was an attendance of 18. Mir G. W. Mairs was elected to the chair.. M,r C. E. "Whitburn wasi then called on to read correspondence from the Auckland centre, which contained much useful information, and set out in detail the procedure necessary, in forming classes. After general discussion on the information to hand, it was moved by Mir Richardson, and seconded by Mr Glass,, that classes be formed. This was carried. Mr, W/hitburn was elected secretary pro tern. It was decided that classes meet once a weiek and that both a ladies' class and a men's class be formed. Drs J. B. Roberton and L. S. Rogers intimated their willingness to give every assistance to classes, and agreed to lectulre or examine as might be required. A sub-comtmiittee (Messrs C. E. Whitburn, J. Miller and T. Coupland) was formed, to arrange for a suitable meeting i|oom, and aiso to ascertain the probable size of classes. A motion (moved by Mr J. B. Clifford and seconded by Mr Coupland to the effect that intending pupils hand in their names to Mr Whitburn by 30th June, was carried. Several mentioned that there were a number of others besides those present who were interested in taking up this great work, but who were unable t|o attend the meeting. It was arranged that Mr Richardson, who will be in Auckland in the near future, be authorised to visit the Auckland centre and discuss any matter which might require further elucidation and obtain any further necessary information. It was decided to call a further meeting when the sub-eomimittee could report re meeting room and size of classes, etc., the date and arrangement for this meeting being left for the committee to decide. An apology for the absence of the Mayor, Mrt C. G. Downes, who was indisposed, wc.vs received with regiet. Votes of thanks were accorded the following-, who had rendered valuable service in connection with the initial meeting and formation of classes: Drs Roberton and Rogers, The Waipa Post, The Regent Theatre, the chairman (Mr Mairs), and Messrs Coupland, J. Miller and C. Whitburn. The secretary and Mir Coupland were irtetructed to arrange for representation fibm Auckland centre and Hamilton branch, to attend the next meeting. General particulars re the courseware as follows:—Junior, under 16 years; senior, 16 yeaiis .and over. Courses: Junior, first-iaid, nursing, home hygiene, military sanitation. The first-aid which is the usual course taken by classes, consists of (six lectures, together with practical work, such as bandaging, application of splints, etc., and the fee is usually 7s 6d.
