MONTHLY MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT WITH. The ordinary monthly meeting of Te Awarautu Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday evening, when, in the unavoidable absence of the president. (Mr C. G. Downes), Mir F. W. Bevin was voted to the chair. The secretary, Putaruru Chamber, forwarded a brief report of the proceedings at the recent conference of South Auckland country chambers of commerce at Cambridge, where it had been arranged to hold occasional meetings of two delegates from each chamber at different centres. Matamata was chosen as the venue for next meeting on 18th June, when arlangeimients would be made to appoint a president and a secretary for twelve months, though, it was not proposed to form an association of country chambers. It was pointed out that Te Awamutu was receiving good service from its membership of the Associated Chambers. It was decided to take no action in the matter of the Matamata meeting. The Hawera Chamber sought information as to incorporation and.on the advisability of general incorporation of chambers. —Referred to the secretary. The secretary, Associated Chawibers, forwarded a letter summarising the principal matters dealt with at last meeting of the executive.—Received.

Members of the council expressed a preference for executive meetings on the late afternoons instead of at night, and the secretary was instructed to call the council together on the 26th instant at 4.30 p.m. The Chamber was urged to consider asking for an alteration of the law controlling hawkers, to require each hawker to register before seeking business in town or country. The opinion was expressed that the pi'esent (restrictions were not as effective as intended. At present hawkers sold from house to house, and it was suspected that in some cases the practice was used as a means of obtaining information for nefarious purposes. Genuine traders hawking goods should have no objection to registration, as such would act as a check on undesirables. It wais stated that the Borough Council contemplated re-drafting its by-laws bearing on itinerant traders, and it was suggested that perhaps the Council would at the same time amend the by-law so as to include all persons who sell goods at private houses, whether from sample or otherwise, to require registration. Provision could be made in the by-law for the clerk to notify the police of each license issued, one member remarking, that such a provision would probably be helpful to the police. The need for improved facilities at the local post office was stressed, and it was asserted that business dealt with there was steadily increasing—so imuch so that, there was at times serious congestion. The provision of post office savings bank ledger facilities as from Ist July would be likely to result in more business being done there.—The matter will be further considered at next meeting of the council of the Chamber.
