GWAVAS ANGUS SALE

£13,143 8s FOR 412 CATTLE. AUSTRALIANS PURCHASE 35 HEAD. Messrs Wright, Stephenson & Co., Ltd., report having conducted, in conjunction Avith Messrs Williams & Kettle, Ltd., the dispersal sale of the Gwavas Aberdeen Angus stud, the property of the Estate, late A. S. G. Carlyon, at Koparakore, Hawke’s Bay, on 26th and 27th April. the stud v/as the Best knoAvn in the Dominion, having been established' in 1888, and maintained at a very higK level through the continual importation of the best Scotch and Engjish blood. NeAV South Wjales, Tasmanian and South Australian breeders either present at the ringside or represented, and offered very keen competition for the best of the stock, thirty-five head—a record number—being purchased for export. All parts of the Dominion Avere represented, and as a result of the sale the cattle have been distributed throughout both Islands, Southland and Canterbury taking a considerable number to the South Island, Avhiie j North Island buyers bought very largely, North and South Auckland, Maha\vatu, Rangitikei, King Country, Gisborne and Taranaki bidding ‘up strongly against the big ringside of local buyers. Messrs Wright Stephenson & Co., Ltd., also bought for overseas clients and for numerous breeders in both Islands. The overhead average for 412 head of cattle, the calves being counted separately, was £3l 185:—312 coavs and calves averaged £2B Is 2d, 46 bulls £SB 4s, and 54 heifers £3l 13s Bd. Sixteen head realised three figure prices. The top price of 260 gns was paid for the six-year-old cow, Peony of GAvavas, a Royal Champion on tAvo occasions, the purchaser, after a keen contest with a New South Wales bidder, be-

ing Mr D. G. Forlong, of Bunriythorpe. Her five-months-old bull calf Avent to the same buyer at 100 gns. Sumach of GAvavas, the Supreme Royal Champion bull at the 1932 ManaAvatu Slioav, now rising six years, was purchased by Messrs Pitt Son & Badgery, Ltd., Sydney, for t(ie NeAv South Wales breeder, Mr Frank Bragg, of Scone, at the second highest price of the sale, 220 gns.' A second cow, Privet of GAvavas, six years old, realised 200 gns to the same bidder. Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, Avho were extensiA r e buyers, secured the herd sire, Hori of Tautane, 7 years, at 175_gns, and the president of the Aberdeen Angus Society, Mr L. A. P. Sheriff, of Taihape*, paid iOO gns for another of the sires used in the herd, Acute of Akitio, 5 years. Three yearling bulls realised 110 gns apiece, and tAVo 105

gns apiece, Avhiie tile Royal Champion yearling heifer, Alma of Gwa-vas, real - ised 125 gns, also going to New South Wales, the purchaser being Mr Wilfred Wade, A\dio ' also bought other lots. Captain Cameron, of Tasmania, was another active bidder and his principal purchase was the two-year-old heifer, Hura of G\A T ava's, a daughter of the champions, Sumach and Peony of Gwavas. Bidding right through the sale was exceedingly brisk, an average of over forty lots being sold eacH hour. Many ne\v herds of Aberdeen Angus will be fotinded as a result of tips sale.
