THE PIG INDUSTRY

IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT IN CO-OPERATIVE MARKETING. THE KIWI BACON COMPANY. After considerable discussion among representatives of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd./ the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, and the Kiwi Bacon Cojmpany, Ltd., of Palmerston N6rth, it has, been decided to form a hew cooperative company to purchase the assets of the Kiwi Bacon Company, which concern has operated verjy successfully for some years past. The new company will be known as the Kiwi Co-operative Bacon Co'mpany, Ltd., and the capital, at present standing at £36,000, is held as folioiws: Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, £10,000; Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., £10,000; Picot Bros.. Ltd., £10,000; and New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, Ltd., £6OOO. It is intended to increase the capital to £40,000 by the creation of- 4000 new shares, these to be taken up by the Pig Marketing Association. The ;main objective behind this cooperative company is to secure for pig producers, through the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, a permanent and competitive outlet fcr their bacon pigs. Whi-st the export marketing arrangements of this Association have been most successful, it has not until now been able to take full advantage of local values for its bacon pigs when these were above export parity.

A COMPLETE ORGANISATION. It will be seen from the names of the parties listed as shareholders that the ordinary business activities of the different companies concerned: in this new movement provide a complete organisation to cater for the requirements of bacon producers right from production to sale. The pig producers, through the New Zealand Co-op-erative Pig Marketing Association, will supply the raw material; Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd. (being the Association's export agent), by reason of its extensive organisation in the United Kingdom, which includes the establishment of a bacon-curing factory at Newcastle-on-Tyne, will continue to handle the Association's business in the United Kingdom. The Kiwi Co-operative Bacon Ltd., although now controlled by cooperative interests, will continue to operate as at present in all its competitive aspects, including the usual avenues of distribution. The present successful management has been retained, and will continue to direct the 3perations of the Kiwi Company, as in the past. It will thus be seen that the arrangement effects a complete chain from production in New Zealand to market, either locally or overseas, and it is confidently anticipated that producers will benefit to a considerable extent as a result of efficient handling of the pig business, which can only be provided by such a complete organisation as that of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association. This Association has set out to extend, its organisation throughout New Zealand with a view to securing for pig producers the many advantages of combined marketing through one channel, thereby avoiding competitive elements within the industry* itself.

The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, in becoming associated with this new movement, is adhering to its expressed policy of assisting to build up a co-operative T y-controlled industry which is now accepted as an integral part of dairying. It is, therefore, the considered opinion of the directors of that company that this latest development will prove of material assistance, not only to their own suppliers, but to farmers generally. ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING AT PUAHUE.

A very enthusiastic gathering of district farmers attended a meeting in the Puahue schoolroom on Thursday evening to listen to an address by Mr W. A. Philips, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-op-erative Pig Marketing Association. Mr G. T. Crawley, the chairman, in introducing Mr Phikips, mentioned that the extremely successful operations of the Association during the past season were in no small measure due to the efforts of Mr Phillips. The Association had now developed into a Dominion-wide organisation. In the course of a very informative address Mr Phillips stated that the Association had operated in the Gisborne, Manawatu and Taranaki districts as well as in the Auckland province, and this year, as the result of insistent requests, wou'd operate in many pwrts of the South Island. Very satisfactory arrangements had been, made for the curing of pigs in England, and it was anticipated that these would materially improve the prices for bacon pigs for farmers. The bobby calf trade was entered this- season, and as a result the Association had handled approximately 160,000 calves to date, its operations having been undoubtedly largely responsible for the greatly-increased prices paid to farmers this year. After paying all expenses a sniiall profit was made, and this was to be credited to the suppliers' share accounts.

Mr Phillips touched upon various other aspects of the pig industry, and interesting confidential information was given. s

The following suppliers' committee was elected: Messrs G. T. Crawley (convener), H. Judge, W. Taylor, and W. J. Hodgson, and the meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Phillips,
