POKURU V. TE KAWA CAMP.
(Own Correspondent.)
The Pokuru Cricket Club has not taken long to get into its stride. Although not affiliated to the Waipa Association, membership is still growing. At a meeting held last Wednesday evening Mr J. Speirs was appointed secretary and treasurer, with the added responsibility of coach. Everything augurs well for a very successful and enjoyable season. Among the juniors there are some very promising players. On Saturday last the club journeyed to Te Kawa to play a friendly match with the Eelief Camp Club. Mr Penlington, engineer in charge, and his men did everything possible to make the day enjoyable, and their efforts were more than successful and greatly appreciated by the visiting players and their lady friends. Play began at 10.45, with Te Kawa at the wickets, and by 12.30 a.m. they were disposed of for 56 runs. After luncheon, which by courtesy of the camp staff was served in the kitchen, Pokuru commenced batting, and when stumps were drawn 28 runs had been scored, with seven wickets in hand. During afternoon tea the president of the Pokuru Club thanked Mr Penlington and his men for a most enjoyable outing, and extended a hearty invitation to them to vist Pokuru at an early date. Cheers were then given, and Mr Penlington, acknowledging 'the . compliment, expressed, in a few well-chosen words, the very great pleasure it had given him and the members of his staff to meet the Pokuru Club, and all hoped this would be the forerunner of many similar functions. On behalf of his club he had much pleasure in accepting Pokuru's kind invitation. It was his aim, as officer in charge, to make the conditions of the men in camp brighter, and he could say they had greatly enjoyed the day's programme and would look forward with | pleasure to a return match. (Cheers.)
