LAND SETTLEMENT
INSPECTION OF LARGE BLOCK,
Mr A. H. Cockayne, who is the chief executive officer of the Unemployment Board in its land settlement scheme, left Te Awamutu on Thursday afternoon after the conference with district farmers and members of local bodies, and, with Mr Broadfoot, M.P., and Mr S. C. B. Macky, chairman of the Waipa County Council and member of the Auckland Land Board, visited a block of about 7000 acres of land lying between Parawera; Roto-o-Rangi, and Puahue districts that it is suggested is suitable for acquisition by the Government for closer settlement. From what we can gather, Mr Cockayne was non-committal about his impressions, he contenting himself with securing as much information as possible for submission to the proper authorities. Mr Cockayne is, it may be mentioned, assistant director of the Department of Agriculture. In the early evening Mr Cockayne proceeded to Otorohanga to meet farmers there, and yesterday afternoon he addressed a meeting of farmers and others interested at Te Kuiti; returning to Te Awamutu in time for the public meeting last evening.
