ROAD TRAFFIC INSPECTION.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—l saw in your paper that at a meeting of the Wellington Education Board, held last week. Colonel T. W. McDonald made mention of the expense attached to inspectors. Well, not only does that apply to the Education Department. Others more noticeable are road traffic inspectors. The expense attached to these inspectors, and the upkeep of motor cars, etc., used in the execution of their duties, must be enormous. Who is more fitted than the road overseers of the respective counties to see that all owners of motor vehicles, carriers, etc., are fully registered and holders of heavy traffic licenses ? In the course of their duties they are in daily contact with all users of the roads and highways —more so than the present inspectors, who are such a big cost to the highways and counties. I suggest that this cost could be easily saved in this particular time of economy by just attaching a little more responsibility to the overseer’s duties. I think this is too big a question to go by unnoticed, and I trust some more able pen than mine might take it up.—l am, etc., ECONOMY.
