The Chief Justice, -Sir Michael Myers, addressing the grand jury today regarding a charge of conspiring to defraud bookmakers, said it was disturbing to find that although the Act making bookmaking a crime was passed 11 years ago, bookmaking seemed to be more rife than ever. It was not correct to say that bookmaking could not be stopped, but that could not be done by imposing fines upon their agents. The only way was for magistrates to impose terms of imprisonment without the option of fines. ______
