UNEMPLOYED MAORIS
GRANTS BY NATIVE DEPARTMENT. Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., has advised the King Country Chronicle that the Native Minister has approved a grant of £IOO from his Department to provide work for unemployed Maoris with the Mangapu Drainage Board, which operates between Te Kuiti and Otorohanga. The Board is to supplement this sum by another £IOO, the total amount to be used in employment of 20 natives for the next two months. This will somewhat relieve pressure on European unemployment funds. During the visit of the Native Minister to Te Kuiti last weekfend, Mr Broadfoot drew his attention to the noxious weeds growth around the pa at Te Kumi. The Minister has now decided to take in hand the clearing of this block of land, and will bring it into production. The unemployed Maoris will also be engaged for this work. 1 It is understood that* another 50 acres of gorse in the Waitete Valley is also being cleared of gorse by native labour.
