BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT - r* ■ WITH.

His Worship the Mayor, Mr C. G. Dbwnes, presided at the fortnightly meeting of Te Awamutu Borough Council on Monday evening, and also present were Crs W. J. North, H. C. Rainey, F. J. Gilbert, J. G. B. Gifford, A. Bjaren, G.-.A. Empson, and W. Cf SavMP clerk, Mr D. Bockett, and the borough engineer, Mr W. D. It. McCurdie, also attended the meeting. The Power Board secretary advised that his Board had decided to make a reduction thje charge for street lighting of 10 per cent as from Ist July.—Receivedr

»?The district telegraph engineer of jhe Post and Telegraph Department advised that a new telegraph line was feeing constructed from the post ofßce to the borough boundary on Kihikihi Road, and he inquired where the Council would like the new poles placed The Beautifying Society's secretary sought permission to re-arrange the line of azaleas in Victoria Park and to do any work necessary in the park that would harmonise with the Bowling Club's scheme. It was also recommended that the paths in Alexandra Street be top-dressed by relief workers under the No. 5 scheme, so that the grass could be mown later, thus improving the street. Attention was directed to the large number of dogs that still roam the streets, and the clerk was instructed to require the registrar-poundkeeper to endeavour to rid the streets of the nuisance. The works committee recommended the Council to authorise the engineer to break the sewer in Mandeno Street

in order to make a connecting eye for tnew dwelling being erected my Mr astedt. It was reported that the works committee had been waited on by Mr S. Clark in regard to the issue of a fbuilding permit" for the erection of fa motor shed on his Wallace Road property, and that as the position of the proposed shed did not comply with the by-law it was resolved that in view of the by-law the committee could not recommend the Council to grant the desired permit. Permission was granted the Post and Telegraph Department for its line erection gang that will be operating in the town and neighbourhood for the next few months to camp in Selwyn Park. Several restrictions were imposed so that touring motorists' facilities shall not be restricted.

The resolution carried at the recent public meeting on library matters, respecting the most favoured site for the proposed new building, was conveyed in a letter from the secretary of the Library Committee elected at that public meeting. The Council was also asked to appoint two of its members to the Library Committee. Cr Gifford enquired what powers the Committee had? The Mayor said that though the Council is virtually the controlling

authority the committee has managed library affairs so well that he thought Jot wise to encourage them to carry on *with the good work. After discussion, the Mayor and Cr Emipson' were appointed. Cr Gifford remarked that the Library Committee could be chosen from non-residents of the borough. That would not be desirable. It was mentioned that the Council

controls the building fund. The Mayor .explained that at the public meeting it was considered the time is now opportune for erecting a new building to house the library and provide a reading room. The meeting did not favour -the site adjoining the Plunket room, preferring one immediately behind the War Memorial. A plan of a suitable building had been drafted that, though a separate entity, would permit of its amalgamation with the major scheme for a town hall, municipal offices and public library block. He had inspected the plan and considered it quite feasible. By going ahead with the building now

a public facility would be provided. Or Empson said there seemed to be divided opinions as to the most suitable site. One section favoured the Mechanics' Institute in Redoubt - Street, another thought the Y.M.I, site in Market Street better, and the site behind the War Memorial was an-

.'other. v f ? - ' The Mayor gave notice to rescind the resolution recorded last year setting aside the site near the Plunket room. He"added that that would pave the way for discussion and decision at next meeting of the Council if so i^desired. *' '■' It was decided to ask the Power Board to provide three more street •lights—one in Mandeno Street, another in Leith Street, and the third in Young Street-.
