ILLEGAL LIQUOR
"NOT AN ORDINARY CASE."
WAIKATO DANCE INCIDENT.
HAMILTON, Wednesday. A charge of selling wine without a license was preferred against Innes and Company to-day before Mr Wyvern Wilson. ■*' A • '
Senior Sergeant Swepfrey said that on May 23 a man named: purchased three gallons of'beer and two bottles of wine from Innes for a man named Dunn. Some of this wine found its way to a dance at Matangi and was given by Dunn to a girl of 17 and out of the dance incident the present prosecution arose. The senior sergeant said Innes and Co. were the holders of a wholesale license to sell wine and spirits at their Auckland premises but not at Hamilton. Mr D. Seymour, for the defendant firm, said a quantity of spirits of various kinds was kept on the Hamilton premises for entertainment purposes and not for sale. A servant sold it without authority. Counsel said he was instructed to say that a clear breach had been committed and that the firm very much regretted it. The magistrate said the case was not an ordinary one of illicit selling. Defendants were holders of a license to sell wines and spirits, but one of their servants had disposed, of some at a place where they were not licensed to sell it. The maximum penalty was £SO, and if a tithe of this amount was imposed, his Worship thought, the penalty would be adequate. Defendants were fined £5 and costs.
