TOURISTS’ EXPENSES
In a report entitled “ Balance of International Payments by the United States Department of Commerce particulars are given, based upon calculations by Dr Ray Hall, which show the amounts spent by American citizens on foreign travel. The t|otal expenditure of Americans upon foreign travel in 1929, after the deduction of amounts paid to American steamship companies, was estimated at £153,000,000, which represents an increase of £6,000,000 in comparison with the previous year. The expenditure of foreign visitors in the United States amounted to £37,000,000, so that tourist travel resulted in a balance against the United States of £116,000,000. Of the £153,000,000, £59,000,000 was spent in Canada, £9,000,000 in Mexico, and the' balance of £85,000,000 chiefly in Europe and in Mediterranean countries, such as Egypt and Palestine. During 1929 283,000 American citizens visited Europe.
