TOPICS OF THE MOMENT.

(Our Resident Representative.) At the Police Court here yesterday, before Messrs Green and Bell, J.P.'s, Ronald Thomas McHugh was chargv ed with stea.ing on or about October 28th, at Otorohanga, £4 10s, the value of a Union Bank cheque drawn by R. V. G. Garrett. Extensive evidence was tendered by C. B. Andrews (storekeeper), R. V. G. Garrett and Constable Fry. Defendant pleaded not guilty, and claimed that the cheque was given to him by Garrett on account of wages due to him. Garrett claimed that the cheque was purloined from his office, to which the defendant had full access, and that he had paid all moneys due McHugh for wages. The cheque was cashed at Palmerston North by the defendant, payment being stopped in the meantime by Garrett, f After a retirement, the bench found accused guilty of purloining the cheque, and fined him £5, and costs, in default three months' imprisonment. One month was allowed to pay the fine. Town and country cricket teams engaged on the local pitch on Saturday afternoon, before a good gathering of interested spectators. The town team won on the first innings with the score board registering 202 to 62. Te Kuiti and Otorohanga High School lads played an interesting game the same afternoon, the fQrmer combination proving victorious by 50 runs on the two innings. The Otorohanga " Kaiwhakas " journeyed to Waitomo Caves and played the Waitomo team, winning by a narrow margin. Under the State's No. 5 Scheme, some of the more financially fortunate settlers of this district are now absorbing a good deal" of labour on their ho" dings. The bulk of the men thus employed are now clearing noxious weed growth, repairing fences and renewing top-dressing activities.

TENNIS. Cambridge players mustered here in force on Saturday and engaged the local players, with the following results (Otorohanga players mentioned first): — Men's Singles: Ward v. D.
