SOME "HOWLERS"

Some " howlers " from examination papers are given in the last issue of the magazine of Harrow School under the heading of " Master Malaprop." Among them are the following:— Pallas Athene was the principal caretaker in Athens. The Children of Israel completely masticated the inhabitants of Jericho. The Israelites were always breaking God's laws, so he wrote them on two tables of stone, which could not be broken. Pompeii was overwhelmed by an eruption of saliva from the Vatican. The Romans were so glutinous that they took emetics with their dinner. The Pope sent Luther a Papal Legate, but he tore it up and never read it. Addison was the founder of " The Tatler " and " The Sketch," according to Master Malaprop, who stated also that if the Forth Bridge was to collapse they would build a fifth.
