RIVER BANK PROTECTED

IN THE EARTHQUAKE AREA. (By Telegraph. Press Associate NAPIER, Friday.

An offer of £IOOO as a free grant and an advance of £9OOO for 30 years at 4| per cent, the first two years to be free of interest, was made by the Hon. R. Masters, Minister without portfolio, to-day, on the Prime Minister's behalf, to the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board. The offer was made to enable the board to comp'ete the restoration of the protective banks. Meanwhi'e the board's decision to stop work to-morrow stands, and the Government offer will be discussed at a full meeting at the beginning of next week. ■ The board already owes £3OOO for wages. The chairman, Mr Morgan, asked Mr Masters if the Government would advance.

Mr Masters regretted that the board could not meet sooner, and he undertook to convey tne representations to the Prime Minister.
