MATERNITY HOSPITAL

PRAISE FOR WAIKATO.

BEST IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. Dr Marshall Allan, professor ot obstetrics at Melbourne University, who has just completed a visit to New Zea and, made at the request of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society, has left Wellington for Auckland, en route to Sydney. Before eaving, Dr Allan said: " I have been much impressed by the standard of efficiency of St. Helens hospitals in New Zealand. 1 may be permitted, however, to point out what appears to me to be a fault in the system, and that is no provision is made, as far as I could learn, for the admission of emergency cases. Such cases as a rule are sent to general hospitals, which are not specially staffed for the treatment of maternity cases. I may mention that the Women's Hospital. Melbourne, accepts al. emergency cases. ,

" The maternity hbspital at Hamilton, built by the Waikato Hospital Board, is in structure and equipment the most up to date in Australia and New Zealand. " 1 was pleased to learn that this maternity Hospital is available for the patients of all the doctors, in the vicinity, and it will be of great benefit to the mothers in that district. This maternity hospital is a true community institution. '• I am convinced that with the ex cellent training of midwives and the special attention now being devoted to maternal welfare, not only will thu maternal death rate and stil -birth rate in New Zealand be reduced, but there will be a lowered incidence of disability among women as a result of motherhood."
