A NEW GEYSER

IN BED OF WAIKATO RIVER A somewhat startling experience is reported from Atiamiri, where a new bridge is being erected to- span the Waikato River for the Taupo Totara Timber Company. A pier is to be placed in the centre of the river and necessary preliminary works were in progress. This included the placing of a coffer dam on the site of the pier. No sooner was the water sumped out of, the area included within the dam than a geyser broke out, sending a spray of boiling water upwards. This new geyser is located at a spot which has hitherto been 35ft. beow the normal level of the Waikato River. It is surmised that the removal of the pressure of the river has enabled the pent up forces from the subterranean pasages to find an outlet. . Fortunately, the geyser, broke out at a most opportune moment and nobody was hijured. It occurred just a few minutes after the men had ceased work for dinner and only a few minutes previously eight men were at work and would most surely have been trapped in what speedily became a funnel for the gushing boiling water and steam.
