DISTRICT HAPPENINGS. THE TENNIS SEASON CLOSES. ((Our Resident Reporter.) Playing in the finals at the Otorohanga Tennis Club’s courts on Saturday Miss Calvert (plus 10) beat Miss Symes (plus 25), 45 —43, for the Handicap Singles Cup, presented by Mrs P. F. Skinner. At an enjoyable dance on Mbnday night the prizes won during the season were presented by the president, Mr P. F. Skinner, as follows: Ladies’ singles championship, Miss Corboy; men’s championship, Mr F. W. Whyte; ladies’ singles handicap, Miss Calvert; men’s handicap, Mr C. Howarth; men’s doubles, Messrs Whyte and Philpot; ladies’ doubles, Misses Lawson and Leatham; combined doubles, Miss Calvert and A. Fleming. A combined Mercantile team from Te Kuiti visited Otorohanga on Sat-, urday afternoon last and played the local team, an interesting exhibition of really good cricket resulting. Mercantile batted first and made 93, of which the veteran, Lusk, contributed 40 odd. Otorohanga replied with 155, of which E. Boggust compiled 37 by high class play. The large number of metalling contracts, under the jurisdiction of the Otorohanga County Council, are being pushed rapidly ahead, and given r.easqnabl fine weather conditions during the next month a record for length of metalling laid in one season will probably be reached. Mr F. 0. R. Phillips has now almost recovered from his recent accident. Mr C. B. L. Message, a prominent business man of Otorohanga,. is still an inmate of a private hospital at Auckland, and his expected complete recovery is slower than his many friends had hoped for.
