ROAD CONTRACTOR’S FATE
FALL FROM A BARGE. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) MERCER, Friday. Walter Carroll, aged 26, a contractor at Meremere, on the Rangiriri deviation, four miles sPuth of Mercer, fell off a barge into the Waikato river at midnight last night and was drowned. The police dragged for the body without success, but it was later recovered by friends of deceased, who repeatedly dived \to the bed of the river until they located it. The drowned man is a son of Mr Frank Corroll, of Station Road. Avondale.
A companion, Mr Gordon Fraser, jumped in with the object of rescuing Mr Carroll, but he did not succeed. The body was found on the bed of the river this morning by a Maori diver. At an inquest before Mr C. K. Lawrie, district coroner, this evening a verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
