PRJME MINISTER'S VIEWS. SPEECH AT HUSTINGS IN WELLINGTON. At ten minutes past twelve the< Prime Minister addressed the Wellington electors from the Dominion newspaper bufidings., On coming forward there was a great demonstration, cheers and boos being intermingled. The. noisy section counted Mr Coates out. Finally,, after some minutes, the Prime Minister was able to make himself heard. His voice was husky, showing the effects of the strenuous campaign just concluded. Mr Coates said:— " Ladies, and gentlemen, the people have had their opportunity, and have expressed their mind. (Howls and cheers.) We have worked hard, and have done all that in our opinion was best, always placing our country first.
(More uproar.) The immediate future: so far as the parties are concerned; isdifficult to estimate, and I can only hope J th'ait whatever the outcome the country will be the first consideration of Parliament. When the final figures A are complete I will take an-early op- '■ port Unity to consult my ; " colleagues* .Naturally I regret the result, and I ■' extend my sympathy to those who have gone down, and ask them to be of good cheer. (At this stage there , was a'pause until the rtpise subsided a little.) You can depend on our doing the right thing. .... One thing, we cannot all talk at once ! (Boos and cheers.) Good night to you all. (More uproar.) Good night! " The Prime Minister retired to a perfect uproar, cheers coming from one section while the other section was busy counting ten. Shortly afterwards Mr Coates spoke from the Evening Post buildings.
