“CHARITY DAY.”

A FAIR RESPONSE. Annually the Waipa Rugby Union,., in common with most other football .authorities in the province, sets aside a Saturday to be called “Charity Day,” wheng ate receipts are a-pplied to some worthy cause, such as the relief of a distressed family: This year the Waipa Union arranged for last Saturday as “Charity Day,” and secured the assistance of Mrs W. H. Wood to make a box collection in the street. Supplementary lists _ were also opened a few days previously' at two business places. That the public of Te Awamutu and district are willing to help any worthy cause, provided it is sponsored by some recognised organisation, is. evident by the fact that the gate receipts, the' box collection .and the lists represented an aggregate of about £3O. This is creditable, especially as many of the contributors did not ask who was to be the recipient.—they were content to accept 1 the fact without - asking questions. Mrs Wood informs us that one gentleman, putting two £1 notes in the box, said he had been "offered that sum as a fee for services rendered, and he willingly passed it on. Another gentleman gave £l, while the two lists showed contributions ranging from £2 2s down to the modest 3d.—the latter handed in by a small boy who happened to see the list, and with a generous impulse gave all he had. The Rugby Union will forward the money collected to the proper quarter, not as a charitable gift, but as an indication of goodwill and in the hope that it may help to meet the many liabilities that a very long spell of sickness and the death of the breadwinner, imposed . on the family.
