AROHENA DISTRICT

TRANSFER OF TERRITORY.

(FROM OTOROHANGA TO WAIPA COUNTY. 'A definite proposal to secure mtor® direct representation in county affairs was made by the settlers in the Arobena district, some miles to the south east of Pukeatua, on Mondlay, when the Waipa County Council was approached for its views.

The Otorohanga County clerk forwarded a copy of a petition signed by J. H. Cameron and 23 other settlers in •the Arohiema district asking that their lands be transferred from Otjorohanga to Waipa County control, arid that if Otorohanga County Council is agreeable that expense would be saved if the new boundary was fixed by a representative of each county, acting with one appointed by the settlers themselves. Otorohanga County is agreeable and Cr. Thomson and the engineer were appointed to represent that Council in the negotiations. Cr McGee said it was a matter affecting his Riding which is alreadiy over 20 mlilels long. To tack on a further ten miles of territory would make the Riding too big. 'He mentioned that Arohena is practically a soldiers’ settlement, and that only about five of them have paid their rates. The settlers all traverse Waipa roads to get to their market centres which are Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Pukeatua and Putaruru. He understood many of the properties had been revalued, with big reductions. Thus the county rates would be very small. He (Cr. McGee) suggested that nothing be done until the council lri more fully informed of the position. It was decided to defer the matter until the engineer has reported.
