The second hockey test match between the Indian Army and New Zealand playedi at Auckland last Saturday, resulted in a win for New Zealand by four goal's to three. This is the first defeat met with by the Indian Army team on the present tour. The weather was cold, with a boisterous wind, but the rain held off. The ground was in splendid order. There was an attendance of about 10,000. The match will, be remembered for the very high pitch of excitement and interest it created. More than that, it was a classic Example of first-class hockey. It was characterised by two phases. The first wais when the New Zealand forwards organised a series of brilliant attacking movements, which broke down the Army defence and culminated in four goals to the opponents’ one. The feature of the second phase of the match was the grim determined effort of the visitors to make up the considerable leeVay. This campaign would have been crowned with success had it not been for the magnificent work of every man in the New Zealand backs. During this anxious stage of the game, the New Zealand defence’ was beyond praise. It kept out the redoubtable visiting forwards and. gave New Zealand! the victory.
