KAKEPUKU AFFAIRS
NEW SCHOOL RESIDENCE
AUTHORISED,
For several years now the Kakepuku settlers have been striving to improve the amenities of the district. The school building had become too small for the district, -and in response to persistent representations an extra classroom was added last year. Since then the district settlers have been busily occupied in providing a public hall, and that their efforts were -successful is 'well known, for there is a building in the centre of the district that is a distinct credit to all concerned.
By the way, it may be mentioned that the settlers intend next Saturday evening to tender a complimentary smoke concert to the voluntary -workers on the erection of the building. The Mayor of Te Awamutu (Mr L. G. Armstrong) has consented to -preside on 'this occasion, and it is expected there will he a large and representative attendance.
'A meeting of a'll settlers in the district is to be held to-morrow evening at the school to discuss the matter of what shall be done Avith the piano noAV at the school. The instrument was purchased by the settlers, chiefly for use at -social gatherings that Avere then held in the school, but now the public hall is available there is a proposal that the piano should be removed to the ha’ll. It is expected that a decision on the point Avill be reached to-morroAv evening.
The latest event of -importance in the district is intimation that a new residence for the scholomaster is to be erected. The secretary of the School Committee, Mr €. J. 'DeAV, received the folloAving letter from the secretary of the Auckland 'Board of Education on his return from the Queen 'City last Thursday:—“With reference to previous correspondence upon -the subject, I am directed to inform you that the Department of 'Education, Wellington, has now authorised a grant for the erection of a three-roomed residence at the Kakepuku school. The Board’s architect has been instructed to prepare plans and invite tenders for the work at as early a date as possible (Signed) E. C. Purdie, secretary.” Needless to say this decision has been received Avith feelings of elation and satisfaction, for the representations have 'been going on for -years—in fact, when (the (Hon. J. A. 'Hanan Avas Minister for Education in the National Government -he Avas asked to sanction it, but could not see fids way to do so. It is gratifying to the progressive -spirits in Kakepuku to know that they are instrumental in making that settlement increasingly desirable.
