MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS

ARE THEY NEEDED HERE?

Following upon the recent discussion at a Borough Council meeting upon the subject of seeking the ratepayers’ approval of the provision of municipal abattoirs the Chamber of Commerce (which body first brought the subject forward) briefly discussed the progress of events at Tuesday evening’s meeting. The Mayor reported that the Borough Council had been seeking information bearing on the usefulness of abattoirs and the cost thereof. The Council was of opinion, that haste should be made slowly in proceeding with the project. It seemed that at present municipal abattoirs would not be self supporting. He mentioned that Cambridge had recently decided to institute abattoirs, and their success or otherwise,'would be watched closely. When it was felt that Te Awamutu was able to maintain municipal abattoirs the matter would be taken up again. Mr Clark asked if consideration had been taken of the stock killed at Ohaupo, Pirongia, Kihikihi, and Te Kawa. All those districts would, presumably, have their stock killed at the municipal abattoirs, and thus there would surely be sufficient business to warrant municipal enterprise. Mr Downes said that the information at present in the hands of the Borough Council’s committee would be added to from time to time.
