“CULPABE CARELESSNESS”

CASHING CHEQUES FOR STRANGERS.

(By Telegraph. Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Wednesday. “A clear case of culpable carelessness,” was the magistrate’s comment in committing for sentence Charles William Bryham on two charges of forgery and false pretences. His Worship further enlarged upon the extreme ease with which valueless cheques wore cashed, despite frequent notice to traders through prosecutions. In the present case there was not even the excuse of a business transaction on which the articles were bought with the cheque, but quite carelessly cheques were cashed to an utter stranger.

The accused stated that he had been in Dunedin three weeks and issued valueless cheques totalling £BS 17s, while two more were found in his possession totalling £52 15s, which he admitted he intended to cash before clearing out.
