PRISONS BOARD
MEMBERS VISIT WAIKERIA REFORMATORY. During the present week the members of the Dominion Prisons Board, including Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice (chairman), Sir Donald McGavin (actihg in place of Dr Hay, at present on leave), Mr C. B. Jordan, former Under Secretary for Justice, and Mr C. E. ’Matthews, Under Secretary for Justice, paid their annual official visit to Waikeria, and there dealt with between sixty and seventy applications for variation of the sentences imposed upon inmates of the institution. Quite a number received very favourable consideration, and the Board’s recommendations will, we understand, be given effect to at an early date. Members of the Board took the opportunity to inspect the buildings and lands comprising the reformatory, and all were impressed with the Improvements effected since last visit. The lands being farmed came m for close attention and favourable comment, members considering the results achieved indicated very good prospects for the development scheme carried out under the direction of the superintendent,. Dr. Gribben. Sir Robert Stout and Sir Donald McGavin returned to Wellingt, n by the Main Trunk express on Thursday night, Mr Jordan left for his home at Tauranga, while Mr Matthews is remaining at Waikeria to attend to further departmental work, after which we understand he proceeds, to Auckland on official business..
