DAIRY PRODUCE CONTROL
COMPULSION FORESHADOWED
In converation with a gentleman in close touch with the ; Dairy Control Board a Manawatu Times representative was informed that the Board was strongly in favour of the compulsory grading of cream for the manufacture of butter, and that a decided effort would be made to obtain the necessary legislation next session. As a matter of fact, said this gentleman, the Board had practically the promise of the Minister of Agriculture to this effect. The Times report says:— “Great praise was given by our informant to the acting chairman of the Board, Mr lorns, for the businesslike manner in which he carried through the new insurance scheme, thereby saving >the producers many thousands of pounds. Touching on the question of. the new freight contract, our representative was informed that the Board was by no means unanimous on this important matter: Some of the members were not in favour of a three years’ contract as well as being averse from some of the minor points in the present arrangement.
This gentleman also foreshadowed some new legislation for next session, dealing with the publication of the over-run of dairy factories, as the existing legislation was considered neither satisfactory nor effective, especially where proprietary companies were concerned. Asked as to what he thought of the compulsory clauses of the Act, our representative was told that several members of the Board were in favour of bringing in compulsion next season. It was obvious, of course, that much would depend on the information and opinions from the members .of the overseas delegation. If compulsion was exercised it would mean that all butter and cheese would be shipped when, where and how the Board directed. The Board would also see that uniform advances were made by factories to their suppliers in order to do away with the unfair competition existing to-day. The latter was almost necessary in, order to work in with the scheme of compulsory cream grading.
