BORSTAL INSTITUTE
WHERE WILL IT BE LOCATED?
The fact-that the Prisons Board members have been visiting Waikeria this week on their annual official yisit prompted inquiry and some speculation as to whether they were, while here, investigating the possibilities of establishing a Borstal Institute in the neighbourhood. It may be mentioned that some weeks ago the Minister for Justice indicated that the accommendation at the Borstal Institute at Invercargill was proving inadequate, owing to its success warranting the transfer of misdemeanants from other places of incarceration to that place, and therefore it was proposed to establish a similar institution in the North Island. Chatting with a member 1 of the Prisons Board, a representative of the Waipa Post sought an indication as to the likelihood of the institution being established In this neighbourhood, but the member would not indicate in any way what, is'proposed, or even whether anything of a definite nature has yet been arrived at. He smilingly remarked that we could make any guesses we liked upon the subject. However, we gathered that an inspection of a tract of country in the Te Kuiti district is to. be made next week, to view its suitability for the purpose, and also that the neighbourhood of Waikeria has also been inspected, but whether other parts of the North Island have been under consideration for the same purpose did not transpire. Just what will eventuate is unknown at present, except pe’rhaps to these most closely elated with the project.
TO BE LOCATED NEAR WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) ■ WELLINGTON, Friday. The west ward of Point Halswell (Wellington) reformatory for women, together with a little over an adre of surrounding land on the military.reserve, is to be used.as a Borstal institute.
