MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE.
FOLLOWS AN ALTERCATION.

AUCKLAND, Monday.
Following ah alleged altercation in Wellesley Street early on Saturday evening, and the death of a man named James White, James Lee, a labourer residing at Mount Eden, was taken into custody on a charge of manslaughter.
It is alleged that an altercation ensued between White and Lee, and that White was struck, and fell to the pavement in an unconscious condition. Lifted from the footpath by persons nearby, White was propped up against a window ledge. He died some minutes later. Sergeant Caldwell and Constable Donnelly then arrested Lee. Dr Tewsley attended to White at the Police Station and pronounced life to be extinct. The inquest was formally opened by Mr J. W. Boynton, S.M., yesterday morning, when evidence of identification and medical evidence by Dr D. N. W. Murray was heard. The proceedings were then adjourned until this afternoon, when at 2.30 the inquest was resumed simultaneously with the hearing of the .charge of manslaughter.
