FARMERS AND VESTEY'S.

MEAT BOARD CRITICISED. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) GISBORNE, Monday. The Farmers' Union to-day discussed the position of the Meat Board and the proposal to transfer the license of the Poverty Bay Farmers' meat works to Vestey's Ltd. Mr Jessep, vice chairman of the Board, wrote stating that if Vestey's rebuild their present works at Gisborne the position would not be any better. The chairman.. Mr Traffjord, said that owing to the peculiar situation of the district, Vestey's could gain more power there than in other districts. There was not the slightest doubt that if Vestey's had only the Gisborne Sheep-farmers' Company in opyposition they could squeeze them out if they liked. If the Meat Board refused to transfer Vestey's license the Poverty Bay Farmers' Meat Co. might be able to reconstruct if they were allowed time. He moved a resolution strongly protesting to the Meat Board against the transfer of the license. Mr Benson, who seconded the resolution, said that it seemed to express the feeling of all farmers in Poverty Bay. The resolution was adopted. A further resolution to the effect that no representative of a proprietary freezing company- should be allowed to sit on the Meat Board was not proceeded with, it being pointed out that such a resolution would exclude men like Mr Jessop from sitting on the Board.
