LAWN TENNIS.
OPENING OF SEASON LOCALLY. There was a large assemblage of tennis playeres and their friends at the local courts last Saturday afternoon including several players from other clubs, who had attended to assist in the formal opening of the Te Awamutu Tennis Club's 1923 season. The day was glorious, and most of the ladies were daintily arrayed in summer dresses. The club's president, Mr R. A. Coyne, referred to the improvement effected in the courts during the off season, saying that the whole seven courts would be available for players this summer, and therefore every devotee of the game would have ample opportunity for play. He was pleased to see the large number of members and intending members present, adding that this augured well for a very sucessful season. Local players had done well in the past in competition with players from other clubs, and he predicted that this would be repeated during the present season. (Applause). He then called upon Miss Irwin, as the winner of last season's ladies' championship, to hit the first ball over the net, and this done in accomplished style formally declared the courts open. A very pleasant afternoon's sport was indulged in, several enthusiasts playing till well after 6 p.m.
