WATERSIDERS' WAGES.
SEEKING SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE

WELLINGTON, Wednesday.
Demands for a new agreement have been received by the shipowners from the New Zealand Workers' Federation. The national agreement under which tbe watersiders are at present working, expired at the end of last month, and the ordinary rate of wages is) at present 2s 3d per hour, plus a bonus of Id. The increase which the men are asking is said to be in the vicinity of from 3d to 6d per hour. Steps are now being taken to call a conference of shipowners to discuss! the new demands.
ONE BIG UNION

WELLINGTON, Wednesday.
The New Zealand Workers' Union, the membership of which is approximately 22,000, has decided to adopt the one big union scheme, which was formulated at a conference of representatives of the New Zealand Workers* Union and Australian Workers' Union early last year. This means that the New Zealand Workers' Union has becoma part and parcel of the Australian organisation, the name of which is now the Australasian Workers' Union. The New Zealand Union will retain full autonomy over its own affairs. It is expected that there will be a big accretion to membership this year. A conference is to he held in Sydney on January 27, and New Zealand will be represented.
