ELECTRIC CURRENT.

CELEBRATION DISCUSSES.

COUNCIL AND THE BALL

The Mayor told the Te Awamutu Borough Council last evening that everything was proceeding satisfactorily for celebrating the arrival of electric current in Te Awamutu od. 26th August. The last of the transformers required had reached Auckland safety, and there was no hitch anticipated now from any quarter. The Minister of Public Works bad made a note of the date, and would endeavour to be present, and acceptances had been received from many other public men. Cr Wynyard said apparently !the Power Board employees were to arrange a ball, and the Council was arranging a lighting ceremony and entertainment of the public men. ~ He asked what financial arrangement was intended. The Power , Board did not seem to be coming forward to ,a*ist. The Mayor replied that the ball was expected to be self-supporting. As to the entertainment of visitors, the Council was awaiting replies before completing its arrangements. Cr Oliphant said complimentary bail tickets were being issued to the councillors. He thought this .was a mistake; they were not entitled to free tickets.

Cr Wynyard said it was a compliment from the Power Board employees, who would regard public men as their guests. Cr Downes said the official invitations of the Council were for the i ceremony near the post office. The hall and other events were supplementary. The public visitors would be taken to. the hotel for ordinary dinner, and he thought the members of local bodies interested should provide the small fund needed for that. Cr Clark said the Power Board employees had undertaken to erect the decorative lamps for the ceremony, and there would \doubtles-s be some expense attached. Cr Wynyard said though the employees had undertaken to arrange the ball they no doubt understood it would be regarded as a public ball, and if so the chief pttblic man of the town (the Mayqr) should be the leading person. Another councillor, suggested they would ask the Mayor to open the ball. Tbe Mayor said it seemed a very fitting idea that the employees should arrange this ball. Cr Wynyard said the employees had already called on the councillors to undertake the catering.

It was decided that Cr /Wynyard meet the employees and 'report to the Council.

Mr Myers, on behalf of the lighting committee, gave a brief summary of the progress made in that direction. Everything was proceeding satisfactorily, and they were convinced that the lighting effects would prove to be , something unique in the history of ' the town. The Town Hall on that occasion would be a blaze of brilliance. The total lighting power inside would total approximately 10,000 candle-power of varied lights, and in addition there would be a huge display outside in fi/prtt o’f the Shall. With hundreds of many-coloured lights, ferns, palms, flags, and decorative papers of all colours the hall in its festive garb on that occasion would indeed be a memorable sight. The meeting, which was of an interesting nature, closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies tor their presence.
