There is every possibility of a special train being run from Te Kuiti to Auckland on the 27th in connection with the football match Springboks v. Auckland. Mr S. C. Macky, of Paterangi, representing the Te Awamutu group of union branches, has resigned from the Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. ' ' A Press Association message from Auckland states that frames Craig, employed by the City .'Council, fell from the top of a centre tramway pole this morning, and was conveyed to the hospital in a serious condition. He is a married man.
Information has reached Mew Zealand that a big libel action is pending against a powerful London newspaper proprietary in connection with statements published during the early stages of the war, which are alleged by certain inhabitants of Antwerp to be defamatory. The statements were contained in an article contributed by Miss Louise Mack, entitled “Spies d have met.” “Joseph Nathan and Co., Ltd., the proprietors of the well-known infants’ and invalids’ food ‘Glaxo,’ recently made an issue of £300,000 worth of preferred ordinary shares in their company in London. The issue had to be closed in two days, as the total subscriptions received from the public then amounted to £650,000, and a deal of difficulty was experienced in making allotments to meet all demands.”
An instructive sidelight on the at titude of mind of German business men is given in the following letter which the Daily Despotch published recently. “Gentlemen,” wrote the German, “the goods you have had the kindness to order me are ready for expedition, but I ani sorry I must inform you that I cannot send it at the present time because of the measured unrighteousness which your country and our other enemies have done against us, and think to run us down. I mean principally the 50 per cent which is to be paid from my Fatherland. It is impossible to make a business with our enemies under these conditions! .Wish you to receive the goods, please prepay me the amount as per the invoice included. The goods will be shipped then at once, besides I beg to remark that any sensible German man has the conviction that our country! has not induced the war but the others! The, Frenchmen have preached the “Revanche’ since 40 years, and Britain is not pleased that Germany has been a great and mighty country. 'The untruth of our enemies have done your effects.”
