GENERAL ITEMS.
The heavy downpour of rain on Saturday has caused a flood in the river and consequently shingle operations are curtailed. However, “dumps”* have been made" and the local contractors are able to continue their operations in connection with the supplies on order. The Waitomo -County Council has arranged for the services of the -Te Kuiti Borough poundkeeper in connection with the clearing of the County roads of straying stock.
The cricket match at Taumarunui for the Hamill Cup between Maniapoto and Taumarunui teiams was played on Saturday in very adverse weather. The Maniapoto batted first and ran up a score of 89, -Chote topping the list with a well played 38, MeIndoe 9 and Hamill 3. Extras amounted to 15. The playing of Chote proved that he has got used to the rough pitches used hereabout and his selection in a representative team appears to be justified. The Taumarunui team scored 105 for 5 wickets, things being in their favour owing to a wet ball which the bowlers could not,do much execution with.
The monthly meeting of the Town Board will be held to-morrow (Wed nesday) afternoon at 3 o’clock. The householders’ meeting for the election, of school committees is to take place next month, and nominations are invited. So far as Otorohanga is concerned it has been suggested by several householders that the present committee should be persuaded to accept office for a second term, as the members have done good work and initiated the movement to obtain a site for a new school building, the present one not being large enough and its position not being of the best from an hygienic point of view. This alone is a work that might well be left to the present committee to “ win through ” with. Apropos of Waitomo county affairs, and in -reply to an estepmed correspondent, we may say that had it n-ot) ; - been for the fact that the press representatives were told that the fih-'A~..< ance committee’s report regarding duction of staff, etc., was to be taken in committee, the Waipa Post’s representative would not have left the chamber in order to catch his train, and would have reported what took place. As far as the press was concerned, any newspaper man present during the discussion was there by courtesy of the Council, and of course was not expected to report what was said. This is the reason of the matter not being reported by us.
