CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.

When sentencing Edward Scott Pritchard, a letter-carrier, to twelve months’ reformative detention for theft of money from four letters, Air Justice Herdman stated that public confidence must be maintained in public departments, and he would not give probation to any postal official in similar circumstances.

AUCKLAND, Monday,

J. J. Boyd was charged at Onehunga Police Court this morning with a breach of the borough by-laws by keeping wiithin the .borough certain lions, tigers, leopards and hyenas, contrary to the by-laws. An adjournment was applied for but refused, but the magistrate declined to inflict a penalty for each day in which the animals had been kept in the borough contrary to the by-'laws. Defendant was convicted and fined £2O and £5 12s costs. Notice of appeal was given and costs of the appeal fixed at £2l.
