BEING BLASTED AWAY.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday

This morning about two tons of explosives were used in firing the first shot in the' sugarloaf, Paritutu, with the object of procuring stone for harbour extension. About '30,000 tone are estimated to have been dislodged. The engineers profess satisfaction with the results, much larger stone being dislodged. The mutilation of Paritutu, which is a historic landmark, has been much canvassed, but the results are said by engineers to justify it.
