LAPSE ON PROBATION.
MAX GOES TO GAOL. • CASE IN TE AWAMUTU. An elderly man, Duncan Mackay, appeared before the Police Court at Te Awamutu on Tuesday, charged with intent to defraud, by a false pretence, to wit, a valueless cheque, by which he obtained 18s from J. W. Henderson, Accused was released from Waikeria Reformatory recently on one month’s probation. His former crime was false pretences. He had been working in Te Awamutu as a blacksmith, and later with Pomeroy and Co., of Hamilton. On his release, he was given £3 5/, and spent it. He entered the shop of J. W. Henderson, a tailor, and conversed with him. He said he was one of the firm which had bought out Spinley and West in Te Awamutu, and ordered a suit of clothes costing £l3 13s. When he was asked for a deposit accused replied that he had plenty of money, and would call later. On 14th May accused obtained a blank cheque from Henderson, senr., filled it in for £l, and asked Henderson, junr., to cash it. Believing his story, Henderson gave him 18s, all the change in the shop. The cheque was paid into the bank, and subsequently returned, marked “No account.” Accused, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced .to two months’ imprisonment in Mount Eden Gaol. Colonel H. R. Ryder and Mr W. Jeffery were on the bench.
